The KonMari Method 101
The only question you need to ask yourself - does this spark joy?
Is the KonMari (KM) Method for you?
This is an organizing method developed by Marie Kondo, popularized by her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”.
By definition the KonMari Method is a simple but effective tidying method, using only a single piece of criteria -choosing what sparks joy! You are not choosing what to discard, but rather to keep only the items that speak to your heart.
Prior to becoming a KM certified consultant, I read and implemented the method in my home (and life!). Through this method I was able to escape the vicious cycle of clutter. I found so much clarity when the stresses of objects that don’t spark joy were no longer lingering in my home.
As the saying goes ‘start before you’re ready’. It’s important to just begin the journey to make your way towards change. I’ve simplified the process into 5 key steps to get you started -
Vision - establish a vision for your home. What types of items are in it? I recommend creating a mood board (digital or physical) or writing down what your ideal lifestyle would look and feel like.
Declutter first - it is imperative that you remove objects that don’t spark joy, have an immediate purpose in your life, or align with your ideal vision of your home. This allows you to have visibility in everything you are choosing to keep before you organize and put things away.
Address items by category, not location - the KM method follows a specific category order to build on your joy checking skills. Start with a) clothing, b) books, c) paper, d) komono (miscellaneous items) and lastly e) sentimental.
Sort and designate - once you have joy checked all items, you can determine the optimal location to store your belongings. This is also a good time to procure storage products and implement systems.
Evolve - the KM method is not about perfection, but continuing to prioritize what sparks joy. Over time you may feel differently about items in your home, people in your life, and activities you participate in. You must do what’s right for you and choose joy.
Want a deeper dive into the KonMari method? I recommend reading “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” for all the details.
Choose Joy!
